How blood pressure indicates our health

Two types of blood pressures, being Systolic and Diastolic pressures, reading indicators to be Normal at 120/80; Elevated at 120 to 129/80; High blood pressure stage 1 at 130 – 139 / 80-89; High blood pressure stage 2 at 140-180 / 90-120; hypertensive crisis exceeding 180/120.

The risk factors for essential and secondary high blood pressure are 

  1. Age. The risk of high blood pressure increases as a person becomes older, the blood vessels become less flexible.
  2. Family history. People who have close family members with hypertension have a significant high risk of develop it.
  3. Genle. Men are more likely to have high blood pressure. Women’s high blood pressure tend to increase faster above 55 year old.
  4. Obesity and being overweight.
  5. Physical inactivity. Lack of exercise and having a sedentary lifestyle
  6. Smoking. The blood vessels narrow, resulting in high blood pressure on Tabacco intake. Smoking reduces the blood’s oxygen. The heart pumps faster to compensate.
  7. Alcohol intake: excessive drink of alcohol dramatically raise the blood pressure.
  8. Poor diet. Many healthcare professionals say that a diet high in fats and salt leads to a high risk of hypertension. More than 50% of the high blood pressure patients has high cholesterol. Poor diet is the cause.
  9. Mental stress. Stress causes high blood pressure, chronical. It could be socioeconomic and psychosocial.
  10. Diabetes. People with diabetes have a higher risk of developing hypertension. Prescribed use of insulin and consistent blood sugar control can reduce the long-term risk of people with type 1 diabetes developing hypertension. Type 2 diabetic patients have high blood sugar, and hypertension. Other factors include certain medications, underlying cardiovascular disease, and being overweight or having obesity that can increase pressure to dangerous levels.
  11. Pregnancy. Pregnant women risk in developing hypertension. Preeclampsia is a placental disorder.
  12. Sleep apnea. Sleep disorder may cause the patients to stop breathing during sleep.

Most people with high blood pressure will not experience any failure symptom on our body system. It is known as silent killer. Hypertension crisis arrives at blood pressure level reaching 180/120 mm of mercury (mmHg). It is a medical emergency. At this stage, symptoms will appear, including Headache, Nausea, Vomiting, Dizziness, Blurred, Nosebleeds, Hear palpitations, Breathlessness.

Link between blood pressure and free radicals

Where free radicals come from?

Free radicals appear to be produced by our own body. External factors like Sunlight and ultraviolet light create free radicals. Other sources include air pollution (industrialise) and Ionising radiation. Smoking causes the free radicals.

Substances that generate free radicals can be found in the food we eat, the medicines we take, the air we breathe and the water we drink, according to the Huntington’s outreach project for education and Stanford university. The substances include fried food, tobacco smoke, pesticides and air pollutants.
